Sea of roses lyrics9/13/2023 Although labelled as a gothic icon, Murphy has always been a lot more of an eclectic individual than an archetypal man in black, sparking from as diverse musical styles as reggae, classical and post-punk in a career that has spanned over four decades. It helps of course that he’s crafted a few masterpieces over the years. It’s doubtful he will ever be swayed from that self-belief either. If nothing else Murphy knows his place at the upper table of underground rock music. It’s fascinating stuff and a sound bite with which he carries a certain sense of authority. He talks about audience projection and playing with irony like he’s a magician discussing the blueprints of his favourite sleight-of-hand tricks. In a telling interview that’s available on You Tube from a few years back, it’s interesting to see Murphy (alongside My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way) discussing the life of being a frontman with an almost Dadaist philosophy. Always a fascinating and intelligent voice on the machinations of fame and the art of being a rock star, Murphy is fully aware of the inherent pose and power of rock music. In this fascinating collection of Murphy’s lyrics and occasional paintings, the legendary singer shows for the most part both his craft and class. It’s kind of true of the Bauhaus frontman too, a songwriter whose soul always seems bruised black and blue like a winter sky, although the crucial difference between him and one of Johnson’s Iowa angels is that he’s nothing else if not a true survivor. Those romantic and doomed men, living in netherworlds of their own making, almost but never quite reaching their full spiritual potential. Whenever I think of Peter Murphy, I always think of a character in a Denis Johnson short story. Rock God, pioneer or pretentious sod? The answer to that question might well be a mixture of all three in Peter Murphy’s extensive collection of lyrics and artistic rarities.
